This math crossword checks whether kids know what math words mean, not just how to compute. Each clue is a short definition: "The answer to a division problem" (quotient), "The distance around a shape" (perimeter), "The bottom number in a fraction" (denominator), "A closed flat shape with straight sides" (polygon). Each puzzle uses 12 of 30 terms.

Word problems and tests lean on this vocabulary, and kids who confuse product with sum, or area with perimeter, lose points even when their arithmetic is right. Use the crossword as a review before a unit test, or as a warm-up at the start of a new unit. For a lighter first pass, try the math word search, then come back to the crossword.

Tips for using it

  • For each answer, ask your child for an example: product? 4 × 5 = 20.
  • Turn off the word bank for a real vocabulary check.

Questions

What grade is the math crossword for?

Grades 3 to 5. A few terms, like sum and even, fit 2nd grade; quotient, numerator and polygon are usually 3rd to 5th.

What's the difference between a factor and a product?

Factors are the numbers you multiply; the product is the answer. In 3 × 4 = 12, 3 and 4 are factors and 12 is the product.
