This winter crossword uses 12 cold-weather words with science-flavored clues: "Rain that freezes into ice pellets as it falls", "A dome-shaped shelter built from blocks of snow", "The shortest day of the year, in December". It's not tied to a holiday, so it works all the way from December into March.

Keep a few printed for snow days. Clues like sleet, frost and hibernate are a natural lead-in to questions about how weather and animals change in winter. With the word bank it suits grades 2 to 4; without it, grades 4 and up.

Tips for using it

  • After solving, ask which winter words are weather and which are clothing.
  • Pair it with the winter word search for a two-part snow day packet.

Questions

Why do some animals hibernate?

Food is hard to find in winter, so some animals, like many bats, groundhogs and chipmunks, slow their bodies way down and live on stored fat or food until spring.

Can I print several different winter crosswords?

Yes. Click New puzzle to draw a different set of words and layout, then print again.
