This kids' word scramble mixes up 12 animal names and prints each as a row of letter tiles with blanks underneath, plus a short clue: "The tallest land animal", "An animal that builds dams with its strong teeth". A word bank at the bottom lets younger kids match the tiles to a name they can read.
Unscrambling is spelling practice in reverse: instead of hearing a word and writing it, kids look at the letters and work out which order makes sense. They try common patterns (does it start with st? end with ing?), and that pattern sense carries over to spelling and decoding. Start with clues and a word bank, then drop the bank as your child gets faster. Switch the theme for holidays, sight words or grade-level spelling words.
Tips for using it
- Teach the vowel trick: find the vowels first, then try consonants around them.
- Have kids cross off each tile's letter as they write it in a blank.
- Cut out the tiles for hands-on practice with real letter moving.
