How to use it
- Pick or paste your words
Choose a theme (holidays, seasons, science, sight words, spelling by grade) or My own words, then paste a list of up to 40 words.
- Choose the help level
Add hint letters (the first, or the first and last), turn on clues, and keep the word bank on for younger kids.
- Check the preview
Each word shows as letter tiles with blanks. Words that can't be scrambled, like a single letter, are listed under the preview.
- Print or download
Click Print or Download PDF. The answer key prints last. New puzzle reshuffles every word.
How to use the word scramble maker
Choose a theme or paste your own list. Themes include the holidays and seasons, topics like animals, ocean, weather and the solar system, the five Dolch sight word lists, and spelling words for kindergarten through 5th grade. For a custom sheet, choose My own words and type one word per line, or separate words with commas. To add a clue, put it after a colon.
Each word prints as a row of letter tiles with a blank for every letter. Short-word lists print in two columns; when a list has longer words, each row shows the tiles on the left and the blanks on the right so nothing gets cramped. Phrases keep their word breaks, which is a useful hint in itself.
What makes a good word scramble
- Never the real word. A scramble that comes out unchanged, or that spells another answer on the sheet (like STAR and RATS), confuses kids. The maker checks for both.
- Few letters in place. It keeps as few letters as possible in their original spots, so kids can't read the answer from the tiles.
- The right amount of help. Hint letters, clues and a word bank turn the same list into a puzzle for a 1st grader or a 5th grader.
- Clean tiles and blanks. Separate tiles make letters easy to see, and one blank per letter tells kids how long the word is.
Word scrambles by grade
| Grade | Settings that fit | Try this |
|---|---|---|
| K–1st | Dolch sight words or CVC words, first-letter hints, word bank on | Sight word theme with hints |
| 2nd–3rd | 10–15 spelling or theme words, clues on, word bank on | Spelling word scramble, word scramble for kids |
| 4th–5th | 15–20 longer words, no word bank | 4th or 5th grade spelling theme |
| Parties and adults | Holiday words, no hints, no word bank | Christmas word scramble, Thanksgiving word scramble |
With the holidays close, the Halloween word scramble and the Thanksgiving and Christmas scrambles are ready to print, and each one works as a party game: same sheet for everyone, first correct sheet wins.
Printing tips
Print at 100% scale. The tiles have a light gray fill that prints well in black and white and photocopies cleanly. Answer keys print on separate pages, so you can keep them with you or leave them out. For hands-on practice with younger kids, print an extra copy, cut out the tiles and let them move the letters around.
When worksheets aren't enough
Word scrambles add variety to a spelling week, but kids who struggle with spelling usually need explicit teaching of sounds and patterns. All About Spelling teaches spelling rules step by step, Spelling Shed turns weekly lists into games, Vocabulary A-Z (which replaced SpellingCity) builds practice around word lists, and Reading Eggs builds phonics for younger kids. Save programs you like to your wishlist, then check scholarships for your state; many may be covered as curriculum, though each program decides what it funds.

Questions
How do I make a word scramble worksheet?
Choose My own words, type or paste one word per line, then choose hint letters, clues and a word bank. The worksheet updates as you type. Click Print or Download PDF when it looks right.
Can a scrambled word come out the same as the answer?
No. Each scramble is checked against the real word and against the other answers on the sheet, and the maker keeps as few letters in their original places as it can. It also avoids scrambles that spell rude words.
How do I add clues to a word scramble?
Type a colon after the word and then the clue, like "owl: A bird that hoots at night", and turn on Show clues. Theme words already have clues, except sight words and spelling lists.
How are phrases scrambled?
Each word in a phrase is scrambled on its own, so "polar bear" stays two groups of tiles with two groups of blanks.
Are word scrambles good spelling practice?
They help kids think about letter order and common patterns. They work best alongside writing the words from memory, which is what spelling tests ask for.
