This kids' word search hides 12 animal names, from LION to KANGAROO, in a 10 × 10 grid of big letters. On the Easy setting every word reads left to right or top to bottom, which is how beginning readers already track print, so the puzzle is about spotting letter patterns rather than reading backwards.
Use the theme menu to switch to a holiday, a season, a science topic, sight words or a grade-level spelling list. When a child finds easy puzzles quick, move to Medium (diagonals) and then Hard (all eight directions). Every puzzle prints with a check-off word list and an answer key, and New puzzle makes a fresh grid whenever you need another one for a rainy afternoon, a restaurant wait or the last ten minutes of a lesson.
Most kids can do an easy word search by about age 5 or 6, once they know their letters. Start with short words that go across and down. By 2nd or 3rd grade, most kids are ready for diagonal words, and by 4th grade for backwards words.
They are good practice for letter recognition, spelling patterns and careful visual scanning, and they make vocabulary from a unit more familiar. They don't teach meaning on their own, so pair them with reading or talking about the words.
Choose Easy, lowercase letters if your child reads lowercase best, and fewer words. A smaller grid such as 8 × 8 also helps, because there are fewer letters to scan.
