1st grade reading passages run about 100 words in large 17-point print. The stories are about losing a tooth at lunch, waiting for wind to fly a kite, and a bean seed that takes five days to sprout. The nonfiction covers ladybugs, the moon and how seeds travel, and there's a wiggly worm poem.

Questions use three answer choices, and the default mix includes one or two short written answers on handwriting lines. First graders are moving from decoding to reading for meaning, so look for two things: can your child find an answer that's stated in the text, and can they explain why a character feels the way they do? If writing slows them down, switch Answer format to Multiple choice. For more practice, pair these with 1st grade phonics, 1st grade sight words and 1st grade writing prompts.

Tips for using it

  • Have your child read the passage aloud once, then silently once before answering.
  • Accept short written answers that use words from the story; complete sentences come later in the year.
  • Do one passage a day rather than several at once.

Questions

How long should a 1st grade reading passage be?

Passages of 80 to 150 words are typical for first grade practice. Ours run about 100 words, so a child can read the passage and answer the questions in one sitting.

What reading skills do 1st graders learn?

First graders learn to decode one-syllable words with common phonics patterns, read grade-level text with accuracy, retell stories with key details, and describe characters, settings and major events.
