First grade phonics usually covers digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ck), the FLOSS doubles (ff, ll, ss, zz), beginning and ending blends, -ng and -nk, and silent e. This sheet mixes all of them. Each word is missing its key part: a digraph, a blend, an ending or the vowel in a silent e word. Your child picks the choice that makes a real word and reads it.

Mixed review like this is how you find out what's solid and what needs another week. If your child misses most of one type, switch the pattern menu to that pattern alone.

Vowel teams and r-controlled vowels usually come later in first grade or in second grade; see the 2nd grade sheet.

Tips for using it

  • Circle any items your child got wrong and look for a pattern: all blends? all silent e?
  • Ask your child to read every finished word aloud. Writing the right letters isn't the same as reading the word.

Questions

What phonics skills are taught in 1st grade?

Usually digraphs, blends, -ng and -nk, silent e, and often vowel teams and r-controlled vowels later in the year. Programs vary in order.

What if my first grader still struggles with CVC words?

Go back to CVC practice first. Blends and silent e build on solid short vowel reading.
