These 1st grade sight word worksheets move from reading to spelling. Each row shows the word, then letter boxes with some letters missing (vowels first in short words, since that's where spelling errors cluster), then a line to write the whole word. The sheet covers ten words from the 1st grade list; change Word group for the next ten.

The answer key fills in the missing letters in red. The list joins the Dolch first grade words with the rest of Fry's first 100, so it includes the irregular words first graders misspell most: of, could, once, their, would and people.

Tips for using it

  • Cover the model word with a sticky note for a harder version.
  • Ask your child to say the missing sound before writing the letter.

Questions

Should first graders spell sight words?

Yes, increasingly. First graders write the most common words often, so spelling them correctly makes writing faster.

How are the missing letters chosen?

About 40 percent of each word's letters are hidden, never all of them, and vowels are favored in short words. The choice is fixed per word, so the sheet and key always match.
