Inference worksheets with two passages and short-answer questions that can't be answered by copying a sentence: why did Abuelo hold the photo for so long, why do volcanologists measure small earthquakes, what does the last line show about the character. Kids have to combine clues in the text with what they already know.

The answer key includes a sample answer for each question, written the way a strong student would answer: a claim plus the clue that supports it. Use them to show what a good answer sounds like, not as the only right answer. This version uses 4th grade passages; switch the grade above for younger or older readers. Pair it with main idea worksheets and 5th grade reading passages.

Tips for using it

  • Use the sentence frame "I think ___ because the text says ___."
  • Accept different answers if the evidence supports them.
  • Practice with pictures and TV scenes too. Inference is the same skill.

Questions

What is an inference in reading?

An inference is a conclusion a reader reaches by combining clues in the text with background knowledge. The author doesn't state it directly, so readers have to read between the lines.

How do I teach my child to make inferences?

Think aloud while you read together. Stop at a clue, say what it makes you think and why, then ask your child to try the next one. Ask "How do you know?" often.
