Main idea worksheets with three different passages and one focused question each: what is this passage mostly about? The answer choices are built to teach the difference between the main idea and a detail. One choice is a true detail from the text, one is off topic, and one is the big idea, so kids learn why a true fact can still be the wrong answer.

This version uses 3rd grade passages. Change the grade for easier or harder text, or turn on more question types for a full comprehension set. A simple routine: read, cover the passage, and say what it was about in one sentence before looking at the choices. For more practice, try the full 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheets or nonfiction passages, where main idea is often easier to spot.

Tips for using it

  • Ask "Is that the whole passage, or just one part?" when your child picks a detail.
  • Have your child give the passage a new title. A good title is a main idea.
  • Nonfiction usually states the main idea early; stories make you put it together.

Questions

What is the main idea of a passage?

The main idea is what the whole passage is mostly about, the point that ties all the details together. Details are facts, examples or events that support it.

What grade learns main idea?

Children start retelling the main topic of a text in kindergarten and 1st grade. By 2nd and 3rd grade, they identify the main idea of a multi-paragraph text and the key details that support it.
