This 5th grade vocabulary worksheet is a word map: for each word, your child writes what it means in their own words, lists similar words, uses it in a sentence and draws it or gives an example. This set covers the first ten 5th grade words (accumulate through contemplate), two to a page.

Word maps take longer than matching, which is the point: building several connections to a word is what makes it stick. Use them for the two or three hardest words each week. The answer key shows a model definition and sentence, not the only right answer.

Tips for using it

  • Let your child use a dictionary, then rewrite the definition in simpler words.
  • The drawing box is great for abstract words; ask how they'd show it.

Questions

What is a vocabulary word map?

A graphic organizer with the word in the middle and boxes for its meaning, synonyms, a sentence and a picture or example.

How should I check a word map?

Look for a definition in your child's own words and a sentence that shows they understand the meaning. The key is a model, not the only answer.
