How to use the vocabulary worksheet generator

Choose a Word list. Each grade from kindergarten to 8th grade has 40 words, split into four Word sets of 10, and each word comes with a part of speech, a definition we wrote for that age and an example sentence. You can see every list on our vocabulary words by grade pages. To use your own words, pick My own words and type one per line:

habitat: the natural home of an animal | A pond is a habitat for frogs.

Then choose an Activity:

  • Word list with definitions prints the words, parts of speech, definitions and examples, a good Monday introduction.
  • Match words to definitions puts the words on the left and shuffled, lettered definitions on the right. The key shows each letter.
  • Fill in the blank gives a word bank and the example sentences with the word removed. Long sentences wrap neatly, and the key fills every blank.
  • Word map gives each word a page half with boxes for meaning in your own words, synonyms, a sentence and a drawing. The key shows a model definition and sentence.

What makes a good vocabulary worksheet

Vocabulary researchers Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown and Linda Kucan suggest focusing on "Tier 2" words: useful words that show up in books and across subjects but not much in everyday talk, like analyze, reluctant or essential. They also stress frequent, varied encounters with each word and student-friendly explanations instead of dictionary definitions. That shapes how these worksheets work:

  • Kid-friendly definitions. Short and plain, written for each grade.
  • Several encounters. The same ten words appear in a list, matching, sentences and a word map, so a week of practice revisits them four ways.
  • Use, not just recognition. Fill in the blank and the word map ask kids to understand and use the word, not just spot it.

Printing tips

Print at actual size. Word maps print two words per page, so a set of ten is five pages; print only the hardest words if you want a shorter packet. Keep the answer key separate so your child can check their own matching.

When worksheets aren't enough

Reading widely is still the biggest vocabulary builder, and some kids benefit from a program that adds daily, adaptive practice. Vocabulary.com adjusts questions to each learner from about 5th grade up, Mrs Wordsmith teaches words with illustrated books and games for younger kids, and Learning A–Z's Vocabulary A–Z (formerly SpellingCity) pairs vocabulary with spelling lists. Questions

How do I type my own vocabulary words?

Choose My own words and type one per line: word: definition | example sentence. A dash works instead of the colon, and the sentence is optional. Up to 40 words.

Why didn't some of my words appear in fill in the blank?

Fill in the blank needs an example sentence that contains the word exactly. Add one after a | and the word will appear.

Are the definitions dictionary definitions?

No. Edulist's editors wrote short, kid-friendly definitions for each word, in the spirit of the student-friendly explanations vocabulary researchers recommend.

Is this vocabulary worksheet maker free?

Yes. There's no account or watermark, just a small edulist.com footer.
