Christmas writing prompts for every grade band. Kindergarten and 1st grade write about their favorite thing about Christmas, a day helping Santa's elves, and a gift they made or gave. 2nd and 3rd grade describe a family holiday tradition, write what happens when Santa's sleigh breaks down on their roof, and decide whether giving gifts is better than getting them. 4th and 5th graders write about a holiday memory that still makes them smile, a story about an elf who wants to quit the North Pole, and step-by-step directions for a homemade gift.

Each prompt prints on its own lined page; K–1 pages include a drawing box. This set shows the 2nd–3rd grade prompts. Add the Christmas reading passages, a Christmas word search and the Christmas worksheet pack for a holiday learning day.

Tips for using it

  • Turn the homemade-gift directions into a real gift project.
  • Have kids read their Santa story to a younger sibling.
  • Use the tradition prompt to interview a grandparent.

Questions

What should kids write about at Christmas?

Traditions, memories, gifts they give, and imaginative stories about elves and Santa all work well. Opinion prompts like giving versus getting add a chance to practice reasons.

Do you have winter writing prompts too?

Yes. The winter set has snow day stories, how animals survive winter and where you'd rather live, for families who want non-holiday seasonal prompts.
