Winter writing prompts that work all season, not just for the holidays. Kindergarten and 1st grade write about playing in the snow, a snowman that comes alive, and how to get dressed for a cold day. 2nd and 3rd grade write about a snow day when something magical happens, explain how one animal survives the winter, and reflect on what they love most and least about winter. 4th and 5th graders choose between endless snow and endless summer, write a story about being snowed in for three days, and explain how people and animals stay safe in extreme cold.

This set shows the 2nd–3rd grade prompts on handwriting lines. Pair the informative prompts with the winter reading passages: "How Snowflakes Form" for 2nd–3rd grade and "Emperor Penguins: Winter Champions" for 4th–5th, both part of the winter worksheet pack. There's also a winter word search.

Tips for using it

  • Go outside first. Real snow (or cold) gives kids sensory details to write about.
  • Use the informative prompt after reading about snowflakes or penguins.
  • Make cocoa and share stories aloud. Writing is better with an audience.

Questions

Are winter prompts different from Christmas prompts?

Yes. Winter prompts are about snow, cold and animals, so they work from December through February and for families who don't celebrate Christmas.

What grade are these winter prompts for?

There are three prompts each for K–1, 2–3 and 4–5. Choose your child's grade above and the matching prompts print with the right lines.
