Kindergarten writing prompts printed the way young writers need them: a short prompt in big type, a sentence starter ("My favorite place is…"), a large box to draw first, and wide handwriting guide lines underneath. This set prints four prompts, one per page.
Kindergarten writing starts with pictures. Children draw their idea, tell you about it, then write a word, a label or a sentence using the starter. Invented spelling is normal and healthy at this age; it shows they're matching sounds to letters. The bank includes prompts about families, pets, feelings, helping and imaginary dragons, plus seasonal prompts. Turn on the graphic organizer for a First, Next, Last planning page. For more practice, add kindergarten letter tracing and kindergarten reading worksheets.
Tips for using it
- Let your child draw first and tell you the story before writing anything.
- Accept invented spelling. Ask them to stretch out each word's sounds.
- Write their sentence on a sticky note if they want to copy it.

What should kindergarten writing look like?
By the end of kindergarten, many children use a mix of drawing, dictating and writing to tell about an event or share an opinion, often in one or two sentences with phonetic spelling. Some write more, and some are still labeling pictures.
Why is there a drawing box?
Drawing helps young children plan and remember what they want to say. Many kindergarten writing programs start every piece with a picture.
