This winter word search pulls 15 words from a 30-word bank about snow, ice and staying warm: blizzard, icicle, igloo, sleet, flurries, snowflake, mittens, earmuffs, polar bear and the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It isn't tied to a holiday, so it works from December through the end of February.

Keep a few printed for snow days and indoor recess. The Medium setting adds diagonal words, which keeps 2nd to 5th graders hunting a little longer. Several words lead into quick science questions: why does sleet bounce, why do icicles form on sunny days, and what does hibernate really mean? Click New puzzle for a different set of winter words each time you print.

Tips for using it

  • Pair the puzzle with a snowflake craft. Real snowflakes have six sides, and so should paper ones.
  • Ask kids which winter words describe weather and which describe clothing.

Questions

When is the winter solstice?

In the Northern Hemisphere it falls on December 21 or 22. It's the day with the fewest hours of daylight, and the start of astronomical winter.

What's the difference between sleet and snow?

Snow falls as ice crystals. Sleet starts as snow, melts into rain in a warm layer of air, then refreezes into small ice pellets before it lands.
