Gooroo
A New York City tutoring and online-course company that matched students with vetted tutors. As of May 2026, Gooroo says it is not accepting new tutoring, tutor-matching or course enrollments.
What is Gooroo?
Gooroo is a New York City tutoring company run by BOK Solutions, Inc. Its site copyright dates to 2015. It combined private tutor matching with online courses and project-based clubs. It also worked with the NYC Department of Education and served as an afterschool vendor for a Texas school district.
Important: In May 2026, Gooroo posted a notice saying it is not currently accepting new consumer tutoring, tutor-matching or online-course enrollment requests. The company says it is evaluating a future focus on trustworthy, accountable AI for learning and student protection. Existing users can email support@gooroo.com.
How it works
Before the pause, Gooroo worked like a matched tutoring membership:
- A family described the student's grade, goals and learning style.
- Gooroo picked a tutor it judged a good fit, using its own vetting process.
- The tutor assessed the student and built a custom plan.
- Sessions happened in person across the five boroughs, often at home, or online.
A premium tier added learning consultations, proctored practice tests and college admissions counseling. Gooroo also sold self-paced online courses and Gooroo Clubs, which were project-based units with quizzes and a final project.
None of this is open to new families right now.
What it covers
| Area | Examples from Gooroo's site |
|---|---|
| Academic tutoring | Math, biology, physics, vocabulary, ESL |
| Test prep | SAT, ACT, NYC SHSAT |
| Technology | AP computer science, robotics, design and video software |
| Arts and languages | Acting, music, American Sign Language |
Its course list mostly targeted about 5th grade through high school, with some programs for all ages and older adults.
Who it's best for
Today, Gooroo is only relevant to existing users who need help with accounts or records. If you found this page because you need a tutor, the better move is one of the active services below.
Pricing at a glance
Gooroo's New York City page still advertises an $80-an-hour tutoring membership and puts typical NYC private tutoring at $80 to $150 an hour. That page reads like older marketing copy, and the company is not taking new enrollments, so treat the figure as historical.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
Not right now, because Gooroo is not enrolling new students. Tutoring itself is often an allowable expense in education savings account programs; see scholarships by state and the Arizona ESA for an example. If you used Gooroo with program funds in the past, keep your receipts and session records.
To plan next steps, save a few tutoring options to your wishlist and apply once on Edulist to the programs that fit. Each program decides what it funds.
