Recess Academy

$18,000/yr

A full online school day for grades 2–10: core academics in a live morning learning pod with an AI tutor called Rocky, a daily community hour, and three live interest-led electives a week in things like Minecraft worldbuilding, game design, art and science. Full tuition is $18,000 a year, and Recess says many ESA families pay nothing out of pocket.

What is Recess?

Recess, branded Recess Academy at recess.gg, is an online school day for kids in grades 2 through 10. It started as an online community of interest-led clubs and has grown into a full program: live core academics in the morning, a daily community hour and weekly electives with mentors. Its pitch is "a full online school day for kids who want to create."

Recess says it serves more than 300 families and that its students tested at the 89th percentile in math and 91st in reading on NWEA MAP in 2025–26. Those are the school's own figures.

How it works

A typical day on Recess's published schedule:

TimeWhat happens
9 amCore academics in a live learning pod, with the Rocky AI tutor on hand
10 am to noonPersonal time for extracurriculars, outdoor play or therapies
Noon to 1 pmCommunity hour with friends, games and shared projects
1 to 3 pmInterest-led classes with mentors
3 pm onFree time for family, projects and sports

Morning academics run in the same small group each day with a Recess adult, and students move on when they show mastery. Self-directed classes include a built-in tutor that answers questions any time. Families can add 1:1 subject instruction.

What it covers

Core academics cover math, reading, writing and science at each child's level. Electives change often; recent examples include Minecraft worldbuilding, Dungeons and Dragons, digital painting and Kerbal Space Program astrodynamics. Students pick three electives a week and can add more.

Who it's best for

Recess fits bright kids who stalled in a regular classroom, kids with ADHD, dyslexia, autism or anxiety, and creative kids who want to build games, films or businesses. It also suits families who want online friendships, not just lessons.

Look elsewhere if you need a cheap or fully self-paced option, if you want less screen and gaming time, or if your child needs an accredited transcript from the program itself.

Recess school tuition at a glance

Full tuition is $18,000 a year, or $17,100 paid upfront. Need-based aid for households under $150,000 can bring that down to $8,000 before state funding. Extra electives are $160 a month. Recess publishes one price for everyone and says it adds no registration or materials fees.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?

Recess says ESA and other state funding can cover tuition and that many ESA families pay $0. It lists programs in 10 states, including the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account, Florida's scholarships and Utah Fits All, with status that varies by state. Funding may flow through a partner school or, for homeschool ESAs, directly to Recess. Each program decides. See ESAs and scholarships by state, and save Recess to your wishlist to compare it with other online schools.

How it compares

Sora Schools is another project-based live online school, for grades 6–12. Outschool offers single live classes rather than a full school day. Primavera Online School and Laurel Springs are accredited online private schools, and Alpha Anywhere offers app-based academics at home.
