Sylvan Learning review summary

A national network of locally owned K–12 tutoring centers. Certified teachers run sessions at a low student-to-teacher ratio, in the center or live online, after a free single-subject Insight assessment.

Sylvan Learning pros and cons

Pros

  • Free single-subject assessment and a written plan before you buy
  • Certified teachers trained in the Sylvan Method
  • Center pricing pages show rates openly, with month-to-month options
  • Covers reading, math, writing, study skills and test prep under one roof
  • Many centers also offer live online sessions

Cons

  • Prices and quality vary by franchise
  • Low ratio, not strictly one-on-one, so attention is shared
  • Registration fees up to $199 at the centers we checked
  • Best rates require a 6- or 12-month commitment
  • No scholarships from Sylvan itself

Who Sylvan Learning is for (and who it isn’t)

Best for

  • Elementary and middle schoolers who do well with structure and a set schedule
  • Families who want in-person help with a teacher, not a college student
  • Students who need to catch up in reading or math across a school year
  • Teens who want SAT, ACT or state test prep from a local center

Look elsewhere if

  • Families who want guaranteed one-on-one attention every session
  • Tight budgets: a full year at 2 sessions a week can run several thousand dollars
  • Students who need a specialized, intensive dyslexia program

What parents say about Sylvan Learning

A summary of public parent feedback we read on forums, app stores and review sites. It is not a set of Edulist family reviews.

Public feedback is mixed. Parents often praise friendly, patient teachers and steady progress, especially for younger kids. The most common complaints are cost, sessions that are shared rather than one-on-one, hard-to-get refunds and quality that varies from one center to the next.

Common praise

  • Caring, encouraging teachers
  • Visible progress for kids who were behind
  • Structure and routine that some kids need

Common complaints

  • High total cost over a school year
  • Small-group sessions when parents expected one-on-one
  • Refunds and contract terms that are hard to unwind
  • Uneven quality between franchises

Can a scholarship pay for Sylvan Learning?

Tutoring is an allowable expense in several ESA programs, such as Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account, but each program sets rules about which tutoring providers qualify. Ask your local Sylvan center whether it is set up as a vendor in your program before you enroll. Sylvan's FAQ says it does not offer its own scholarships.

No program on Edulist lists Sylvan Learning yet. Save it to your wishlist and we’ll tell you when one does. Many state ESAs let families buy products like this directly; each program decides.
