Mathnasium vs Sylvan: the short answer

Mathnasium and Sylvan Learning are both national networks of locally owned after-school centers. The biggest difference is scope.

Mathnasium teaches math and nothing else. A diagnostic builds a personal plan, and your child works through it with instructors two or three times a week, in the center or online. Sylvan covers more ground. Certified teachers help with math, reading, writing, study skills and test prep, usually on a set weekly schedule.

If your child's only struggle is math, Mathnasium is the more focused choice. If reading, writing or the SAT is also on the list, Sylvan lets you keep everything under one roof.

Teaching approach

Mathnasium uses what it calls the Mathnasium Method: find what a child already knows, then build number sense and understanding on top. Plans are not tied to a textbook, so a student may spend weeks on fractions before moving on. Instructors circulate among a small group, checking work and teaching as needed.

Sylvan Learning starts with a free single-subject Insight assessment and builds a plan from it. Teachers, whom Sylvan describes as certified, work at a low student-to-teacher ratio. Each student has their own plan, and a rewards system and regular parent check-ins track progress. Sylvan also runs study skills, homework help and SAT, ACT and state test prep.

What a lesson looks like

Mathnasium: Your child arrives, picks up a binder matched to their plan, and works while instructors check answers and explain. Kids can bring school assignments. Sessions run about an hour, and Mathnasium recommends two or three a week. There's little or nothing to do at home.

Sylvan: Your child comes at a scheduled time, usually about an hour, and works with a teacher who is also helping a few other students. Most students attend two to four hours a week. Your role is mostly logistics and talking with the center director about progress.

Price and value

Neither brand publishes national prices. As of October 2026, third-party surveys put Mathnasium memberships at about $250 to $450 a month, with enrollment or assessment fees often $99 to $200.

Sylvan centers that post prices showed about $42 to $78 per session in October 2026, plus a one-time $95 to $199 registration fee. Two sessions a week at those rates runs roughly $360 to $680 a month, so Sylvan is not automatically cheaper. Its best rates usually need a 6- or 12-month commitment.

Ask both centers for the total monthly cost, sign-up fees, minimum term and cancellation notice in writing.

Can you use a scholarship for either?

Possibly. Tutoring is an allowable expense in some education savings account programs, such as the Arizona ESA and Florida's FES-UA, but each program sets provider and credential rules and reviews purchases. Whether your local Mathnasium or Sylvan center qualifies depends on the program and the center, so ask if it accepts your program's payment platform. Sylvan's FAQ says it does not offer its own scholarships. Save your pick to your wishlist and apply once to the scholarships your family may qualify for.

Questions

Is Sylvan or Mathnasium more expensive?

It depends on the center and how often your child goes. At the Sylvan centers checked in October 2026, two one-hour sessions a week at $42 to $78 each works out to roughly $360 to $680 a month, which can match or exceed a Mathnasium membership. Always compare the total monthly cost, not the per-session rate.

Does Sylvan or Mathnasium help with homework?

Both do. Mathnasium instructors will work on school math assignments during a session. Sylvan offers homework and report-card help as part of its study skills services, across subjects.

Which is better for a child who is behind in math?

Mathnasium is built for finding and filling math gaps from a diagnostic, and its instructors focus only on math. Sylvan also builds a plan from its assessment, with certified teachers. If reading is part of the problem, Sylvan's reading programs are a reason to choose it.

Are either one-on-one?

No. Mathnasium instructors move among several students, and Sylvan works at a low ratio, usually a teacher with a few students on their own plans. For true one-on-one help, look at a private tutor or Varsity Tutors.

Can I cancel Mathnasium or Sylvan anytime?

Terms are set by each franchise. Some Mathnasium centers require multi-month commitments, and Sylvan's best rates usually require a 6- or 12-month membership. Ask for the cancellation notice period in writing before you sign.
