How to use the word search maker

Start with the words. A theme is fastest: there are seasonal banks (Halloween, fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter, Valentine's Day, spring, Easter, summer, back to school), topic banks (animals, ocean, solar system, weather, dinosaurs, the 50 states, the human body, plants, science and math vocabulary), the five Dolch sight word lists and spelling words for kindergarten through 5th grade. Each puzzle draws a fresh mix from the bank, so New puzzle gives you different words as well as a new grid.

For a custom word search, choose My own words and paste a list. Line breaks or commas both work. Phrases are fine: spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are left out of the grid, but the word list shows "jack-o'-lantern" the way you typed it. Accented letters are folded to plain ones. The grid grows to fit your longest word unless you set a size; if a word can't fit, the maker tells you instead of silently dropping it.

What makes a good word search

• Directions that match the reader. Beginning readers track left to right and top to bottom, so Easy keeps words in those directions. Diagonals and backwards words are a real step up in visual scanning.
• No accidental extras. The maker repairs filler letters so a hidden word appears only once and no rude words appear by chance.
• Words that don't hide inside each other. When it picks from a theme, it avoids pairing SUN with SUNFLOWER or KANSAS with ARKANSAS in one grid.
• A clear answer key. Each word is circled with a rounded outline, found letters are bold and the rest are gray, so checking takes seconds.

Printing tips

Print at 100% scale for the largest letters. A 10 × 10 grid gives big letters for young kids and for large print word searches; a 20 × 20 grid fits on one page but with smaller letters. Puzzles are black and white with one small color tag, so they print cleanly on any home printer and photocopy well. Print the answer key on the back of the puzzle so kids can check themselves.

When worksheets aren't enough
