How to write the letter Q: Capital Q is a circle like O with a short slanted tail at the bottom right. Lowercase q starts with a circle like a, goes down below the baseline, and flicks to the right.
This printable opens with big models of Q and q: start at the green dot, follow the numbered strokes and the arrows. Your child then traces a row of each and writes more from the start dots. The next pages add the words "queen" and "quilt" to trace and copy, plus the sentence "Quinn has a quilt." on large, preschool-size lines.
Short, daily practice works better than one long session. One page a day for a few days is plenty at ages 4 to 6. When Q is easy, move on to letter R or print the whole alphabet tracing set.
Tips for using it
- The q tail flicks right, and g hooks left. Comparing g and q side by side helps.
- Use a short pencil or a crayon broken in half; small tools encourage a better grip. For children not ready for lowercase, set Letter case to Uppercase only.
Questions
What sound does the letter Q make?
Q almost always comes with u and says /kw/ as in queen and quilt. Saying the sound each time your child writes q links handwriting to phonics.
What are some easy words that start with Q?
Try queen, quilt, quack. The sheet uses queen and quilt because they are short, so the focus stays on forming the letter. Change the words with the generator if your child knows others.
