How to write the letter R: Capital R is a line down, back to the top for a bump to the middle, then a slanted leg out to the bottom. Lowercase r is a short line down, then back up the line and a small curve over to the right.
This printable opens with big models of R and r: start at the green dot, follow the numbered strokes and the arrows. Your child then traces a row of each and writes more from the start dots. The next pages add the words "rain" and "red" to trace and copy, plus the sentence "Rex runs fast." on large, preschool-size lines.
Short, daily practice works better than one long session. One page a day for a few days is plenty at ages 4 to 6. When R is easy, move on to letter S or print the whole alphabet tracing set.
Tips for using it
- A curve that goes too far turns r into n. Stop the curve early, like a little umbrella.
- Use a short pencil or a crayon broken in half; small tools encourage a better grip. For children not ready for lowercase, set Letter case to Uppercase only.
Questions
What sound does the letter R make?
R says /r/ as in rain, red and rug. Saying the sound each time your child writes r links handwriting to phonics.
What are some easy words that start with R?
Try rain, red, rug. The sheet uses rain and red because they are short, so the focus stays on forming the letter. Change the words with the generator if your child knows others.
