GT School
A private K–8 school for gifted students in Georgetown, Texas, built on Alpha's 2 Hour Learning model. Students do accelerated, mastery-based academics on the Timeback platform in the morning and compete in olympiads, debate, robotics and writing projects in the afternoon. Tuition is $25,000 a year.
What is GT School?
GT School is a private school for gifted children in kindergarten through 8th grade in Georgetown, Texas, just north of Austin. It opened alongside other Alpha-affiliated academies and runs on the same 2 Hour Learning model and Timeback platform as Alpha School. It calls itself "the MIT of K–8" and pitches three times the typical learning pace.
The core idea is to remove the grade-level ceiling. A sixth grader who is ready for calculus moves on to calculus, and the time saved goes to competition teams and projects.
How it works
Mornings are for academic acceleration. Students work in adaptive apps for math, reading, writing and science and must show mastery before moving forward. Adults are guides who coach, motivate and hold students to the standard; Reason reported that guides do not deliver lessons themselves.
Afternoons are for applied work. GT lists science and math olympiads, debate and quiz bowl, philosophy, robotics and coding, creative writing and systems engineering. Students earn points for effort and progress and spend them on rewards, which GT staff described to Reason as including prizes and, in some cases, cash.
What it covers
| Part of the day | What students do |
|---|---|
| Morning mastery block | Math, reading, writing and science at each child's level |
| Afternoon tracks | Olympiads, debate, quiz bowl, robotics, coding, writing projects |
| Assessment | NWEA MAP Growth testing to track progress |
GT says its students average from the 94th percentile in reading to the 98th in math and science nationally. Those are the school's own figures, and a gifted-only student body would score high on any test.
Who it's best for
GT fits a bright child who is bored, finishes early and wants more, and who will thrive among peers who think the same way. It suits families who like competitions and measurable progress.
It's a poor fit if your child doesn't test in, if you want less screen time, or if you're uneasy about using rewards to drive effort. Families far from Georgetown should look at the virtual GT Anywhere program instead.
Pricing at a glance
Tuition is $25,000 a year, with a $100 application fee, a $1,000 deposit credited to tuition and a 5% sibling discount. That is well below the $40,000 to $65,000 most Alpha School campuses charge.
Can a scholarship or ESA pay for it?
GT School says GT Anywhere is a TEFA-approved school, so eligible Texas families can use Texas Education Freedom Account funds for it. The school's site does not state the same for the Georgetown campus, so ask admissions. Read our guide to Texas Education Freedom Accounts and the Texas scholarships page for awards and deadlines. Each program decides. Save GT School to your wishlist to compare it with other options.
How it compares
Alpha School uses the same model for all students at higher tuition. Alpha Anywhere brings the academics home, and Montessorium pairs Timeback with Montessori K–6 in nearby Cedar Park. For profoundly gifted teens, compare Davidson Academy; for a math-first gifted path at home, see Art of Problem Solving.
