A chloroplast drawn open to show its parts and what happens in each: the outer and inner membranes, stacks of thylakoids called grana, a single thylakoid, and the stroma around them. Five numbered steps trace photosynthesis from light being absorbed and water being split (releasing oxygen) to ATP and NADPH powering the Calvin cycle, which fixes carbon dioxide into sugar.

The interactive version in our photosynthesis explorer has an Order it quiz for these five steps and explanations at kid, middle school and high school levels. For the whole-plant picture, print the photosynthesis worksheet.

Tips for using it

  • Color the light reactions (thylakoids) one color and the Calvin cycle (stroma) another.
  • Have students follow the ATP and NADPH arrow from the thylakoids to the Calvin cycle and back.

Questions

Where do the light reactions and the Calvin cycle happen?

The light-dependent reactions happen in the thylakoid membranes. The Calvin cycle happens in the stroma, the fluid around the thylakoids.

What is a granum?

A granum is a stack of thylakoids. Stacking packs a lot of chlorophyll-filled membrane into a small space.
