Thirteen prairie organisms are laid out in rows, producers on the bottom and top predators up high. Children draw an arrow from each food to every animal that eats it: grass to bison, prairie dogs to ferrets, mice to bullsnakes and hawks. The answer key draws every arrow in red, so students can see how many food chains run through a single animal.
The food chain game has the same web on screen, where each arrow is checked as you draw it. Change the ecosystem above for ocean, forest, desert or arctic webs.
Tips for using it
- Draw arrows from the producers first, then work upward one row at a time.
- When the web is finished, ask what would happen to the coyote and the ferret if the prairie dogs disappeared.

Questions
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain is one path of energy, such as grass → prairie dog → ferret. A food web shows all the paths in an ecosystem at once, so it is many food chains linked together.
Why aren't decomposers drawn with arrows?
Decomposers break down dead plants and animals from every level, so arrows would run to them from everything. The sheet names them at the bottom instead.
