A Sonoran Desert food web on one page. The producers are prickly pear cactus, mesquite trees and desert grass. Grasshoppers, kangaroo rats, jackrabbits and desert tortoises eat the plants; spiny lizards and scorpions eat grasshoppers; rattlesnakes eat rodents, young rabbits and lizards; and roadrunners, coyotes and red-tailed hawks hunt from the top, with the roadrunner even eating small rattlesnakes.
Arrows point from each food to the animal that eats it. Build desert chains yourself in the food chain game, where every arrow is checked, or print the food chain worksheet with the ecosystem set to desert.
Tips for using it
- Find an omnivore on the page. The coyote eats jackrabbits and prickly pear fruit.
- Ask how desert animals get water. Many get most of it from their food.
