The same top-down orbit diagram as our interactive planets in order explorer, drawn in black and white for printing. The Sun sits in the middle, and the eight planets circle it in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, then the asteroid belt, then Jupiter, Saturn with its rings, Uranus and Neptune, with the icy Kuiper Belt at the edge. Every body is labeled.

Like almost every solar system picture, it is not to scale; at true scale the planets would be invisible specks. The explorer's scale strip shows the real sizes and distances. Use this sheet as a notebook page, a coloring page, or a guide for a solar system drawing or model.

Tips for using it

  • Color the four rocky planets one color and the four giants another to show the two families.
  • Have children write each planet's number (1 to 8) next to its name.

Questions

Is this solar system printable to scale?

No. The orbits are squeezed together and the planets enlarged so everything fits on one page. The interactive explorer has a strip that shows the real sizes and distances.

Does it include Pluto?

Pluto is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, which is labeled at the edge of the page. The eight planets are the ones named.
