How to use it

  1. Pick the facts

Choose the operation, then one number (like the 7s) or all facts, and the range from 0 or 1 up to 5, 9, 10 or 12.

  2. Lay out the cards

Choose 8, 10 or 12 cards per page, stacked or in-a-row facts, and shuffled or in-order decks.

  3. Choose where answers go

On the back for double-sided printing (match your printer's long-edge or short-edge flip), small on the front, or none.

  4. Print and cut

Print on cardstock, double-sided if answers are on the back, and cut on the dashed lines.

How to use the flash card maker

Choose an operation, then decide how big the deck should be. A full multiplication deck from 0 to 12 is 169 cards, which is a lot to cut and a lot to practice. Most kids do better with one family at a time: set One number only to the 6s and you get 13 cards. Skip turnaround facts keeps 3 × 7 and drops 7 × 3, nearly halving a full deck.

Answers on the back print on the page right after each front, laid out as a mirror image. When the PDF prints double-sided, every answer lands directly behind its fact, with the fact repeated small in the corner so a stray card can always be matched. If you'd rather print one-sided, choose Small, on front for a tiny answer in the corner.

What makes good flash cards

  • One fact per card, large and bold. Kids should read the fact in a glance. The maker sizes every card's numbers to the largest that fits.
  • Facts kids can actually answer. Subtraction cards are built from addition facts, so answers never go negative. Division cards are built from multiplication facts, so they always divide evenly.
  • Shuffled order. In-order decks let kids recite the pattern instead of recalling the fact. Shuffle by default; use in-order only while first learning a table.
  • Small decks. Five or ten unknown facts mixed with a few known ones beat a stack of 100.

Printing tips

Use cardstock (65 lb or heavier) so answers don't show through. Print a single test page double-sided before printing the whole deck. Cut the long lines first, then the short ones, and keep each deck in a zip bag or with a binder ring through a punched corner.

When worksheets aren't enough

Flash cards work well for a few minutes a day, but adaptive programs can track exactly which facts are slow and serve them more often. XtraMath is free, Reflex is a game-based fluency program, and Prodigy and SplashLearn mix fact practice into games. Questions

How do I print flash cards with answers on the back?

Leave Answers on the back and print the whole PDF double-sided. Most printers flip portrait pages on the long edge; if your answers come out upside down or behind the wrong card, switch to short edge. Test one sheet first.

How many cards are in a full multiplication deck?

169 for 0 × 0 through 12 × 12, or 144 starting at 1. Turn on Skip turnaround facts to cut that to 91 or 78.

Do subtraction or division cards ever have tricky answers?

No. Subtraction cards never go below zero, and division cards always divide evenly, with no remainders and no division by zero.

Can I make sight word or vocabulary flash cards?

This maker is built for math facts. Sight words and phonics have their own printables in our worksheets section.
