The -ig family is a classic short i family: big, dig, fig, jig, pig, rig, wig and the blend word twig. It's small, but nearly every word is one a young child knows, which makes it a good first short i family.

Short i is usually taught right after short a. Once your child reads -ig words, put them next to -ag words: big and bag, wig and wag, rig and rag. Only the vowel changes, so your child has to listen for it and look at it.

Twig starts with tw, a less common blend, so it's a nice challenge word at the end of the list.

Tips for using it

  • Make a pair game: say bag, your child changes the vowel to make big.
  • Act out the words (dig, jig, wig) to make the list stick.
