The -in family ends in short i and /n/. The CVC words (bin, fin, pin, tin, win) are a quick start, and then the family opens up: chin, shin and thin with digraphs; grin, skin, spin and twin with blends.

That mix makes -in a good review family after your child learns sh, ch and th. Ask them to sort the list into "one sound at the start" and "two letters at the start", then read each group.

In itself is one of the most common words in English, so a child who reads -in words gets a lot of mileage.

Tips for using it

  • Read thin and chin together and talk about how th and ch are each one sound.
  • Spin a pencil on the list and read the word it points to.
