The -ot family is the largest short o family here, with 15 words: cot, dot, got, hot, jot, lot, not, pot and rot, then blot, plot, slot, spot and trot with blends, and shot with sh.

Not and got are high-frequency words, so -ot practice pays off in real books. Lot and plot, slot and spot are good pairs for adding one letter to make a blend.

Once -ot is easy, mix it with -op: hot and hop, pot and pop, spot and stop. Only the last letter changes, so your child has to read to the end of the word.

Tips for using it

  • Add a letter to make a blend: lot to plot or slot, pot to spot.
  • Read -ot and -op pairs to keep eyes moving to the end of the word.
