The -it family ends in short i and /t/: bit, fit, hit, kit, lit, pit and sit, then grit, skit, slit, spit and split. Split has a three-letter blend (spl), which makes it a good top-of-the-list challenge.

It and sit are among the first words many children read, so this family builds confidence fast. The -it and -in families differ only in the last sound, so read them side by side once both feel easy.

A word ladder works well here too: sit, sip, lip, lit, kit changes one letter at a time.

Tips for using it

  • Read -it and -in pairs: sit/sin, pit/pin, fit/fin.
  • Clap once for each sound in split: s-p-l-i-t is five sounds.
