The -ug family ends in short u and /g/: bug, dug, hug, jug, mug, rug and tug, then plug, slug and snug with blends and shrug with the shr blend at the start.

It's often the first short u family because bug, hug and rug are familiar and easy to picture. Short u is close to short o in quick speech (hug, hog), so after this list try reading -ug and -og pairs out loud.

Shrug is a fun challenge: sh is one sound, r keeps its own, so the word has four sounds.

Tips for using it

  • Read -ug and -og pairs: bug/bog, hug/hog, jug/jog.
  • Count the sounds in shrug together: sh-r-u-g, four sounds, five letters.
