Every item on this sheet ends in -at and is missing its beginning. Your child tries each choice in front of -at, writes the one that makes a real word, and reads it. The wrong choices make nonsense words (like jat or zat), so there's one right answer per item even though many letters can start an -at word.

Some answers are single letters (c, h, m) and some are blends or digraphs (fl, ch, th), so the sheet gets a little harder as your child goes.

The -at family is often the first word family children learn. When it's easy, move on to -an and then mix the two.

Tips for using it

  • Read every choice in the blank aloud: 'jat, cat, zat. Which one is a word?'
  • Point out that the -at chunk never changes; only the beginning does.

Questions

Why are some choices nonsense words?

So each item has exactly one right answer. Reading a non-word and rejecting it is real decoding practice.

What comes after the -at family?

Usually other short a families (-an, -ap, -ag), then short i families like -ig and -in.
