This sheet has all eight -ig words in big, clear sound boxes. Your child reads each word, touches a dot for each sound, and writes the letters in the boxes: b, i, g. Twig gets four boxes because tw is a blend with two sounds.

Word families can tempt children to read only the ending and guess the first letter. Sound boxes stop that: every sound gets attention, including the first one.

Short i words like these are often taught right after short a. When -ig is easy, mix it with -ag to practice the vowel.

Tips for using it

  • Ask your child to say the sounds while touching the dots before writing anything.
  • For twig, check that both t and w get a box.

Why use sound boxes with word families?
