The cutaway diagram from our interactive page of facts about Mars, drawn in black and white for printing. A quarter of Mars is cut away to show its layers, and leader lines connect each label to its part: the crust, the mantle, the iron core, Olympus Mons, Valles Marineris, the polar ice cap, the red dust and the two moons, Phobos and Deimos.
Thin outer layers are drawn thicker than scale so children can see them, and moons are not to scale. Use it as a notebook page next to the planet's fact profile, or as a guide for a planet report. To see where Mars sits among its neighbors, print the solar system printable.
Tips for using it
- Have children compare Olympus Mons with Mount Everest: the Martian volcano is about three times taller.
- Turn the sheet into a quiz by covering the labels with sticky notes.

Questions
Are Phobos and Deimos drawn to scale?
No. They are tiny, about 22 and 12 kilometers wide, so they are drawn bigger than scale and placed below the planet.
Is there a blank version?
Yes. Choose Blank or Numbered in the sheet options above to print a version with empty boxes or numbered lines, each with an answer key.
