The plant cell from our interactive plant cell diagram, drawn in black outlines for coloring. All 17 parts are labeled with leader lines, including the three that animal cells don't have: the cell wall, the chloroplasts and the large central vacuole, plus the plasmodesmata that tunnel through the wall to neighboring cells.

Coloring the chloroplasts green and the vacuole light blue makes the difference from an animal cell easy to see. When your child is ready, print the plant cell worksheet with a word bank.

Tips for using it

  • Color the cell wall, chloroplasts and central vacuole first, since those make it a plant cell.
  • Print the animal cell coloring page too and compare the two side by side.

Questions

Why is the plant cell drawn as a box?

The stiff cellulose wall gives most plant cells a fixed, boxy shape, unlike the flexible, rounded shape of animal cells.

Do plant cells have mitochondria?

Yes. Plant cells make sugar in their chloroplasts and break it down for energy in their mitochondria, just like animal cells do.
