This 1st grade sight words list merges the two lists schools use most: the 41 Dolch first grade words, plus every word from Fry's first 100 that isn't already on the kindergarten list. That gives 71 words, including of, could, once, their, which, would, people, water and been.

Print the checklist and check off each word your child reads within about three seconds. If your child hasn't mastered the 92 kindergarten words yet, review those first. First graders are also starting to spell these words in their writing, so add the missing-letters sheet once reading is easy.

Tips for using it

  • Of, could, would and their are the irregular stars of this list. Practice them daily.
  • Have your child find these words in a book they're reading and tally them.

Questions

How many sight words should a 1st grader know?

Many schools expect 1st graders to know the kindergarten list and learn 50 to 100 more during the year, often the Dolch first grade list and much of Fry's first 100 or 200.

Why does this list mix Dolch and Fry words?

Schools use both, and they overlap. Combining Dolch first grade with Fry's first 100 covers both without repeating the kindergarten words.
