Edward Fry's Instant Words are the 1,000 most common words in English reading material, ranked by frequency and split into ten groups of 100. Fry's own introduction notes that the first 25 words make up about a third of all printed material, the first 100 about half, and the first 300 about 65 percent. That's why most schools teach the first 100 in kindergarten and first grade, and the next 200 in second and third grade.

This preset prints the first 100 as a large-type reading card and a record sheet with three dated tries. A few printed versions differ by a word or two (word or words, oil or am); this list follows the widely used 1980-based version. Each hundred below has its own list, worksheets and flash cards.

Tips for using it

  • Test 25 words at a time with younger kids; the first 25 alone cover a third of what they'll read.
  • Kids who know the Dolch lists already know about half of Fry's first 100.

Questions

What grade are Fry sight words for?

A common guide is the first 100 for kindergarten and 1st grade, the second 100 for 1st and 2nd grade, the third 100 for 2nd and 3rd grade, and the rest through 5th grade and beyond. Schools set their own pacing.

How many Fry sight words are there?

There are 1,000 Fry Instant Words in ten groups of 100. Teachers often split each hundred into four lists of 25.

Is Fry better than Dolch?

Neither is better. Fry is longer, more recent and ranked by frequency, which helps older readers; Dolch is shorter and grouped by grade. They overlap heavily, and phonics instruction matters more than which list you use.
