This kindergarten sight words list combines the two Dolch levels most schools use in kindergarten: the 40 pre-primer words and the 52 primer words, for 92 in all. It covers the words in nearly every early reader (the, and, is, see, was, said, they, what) plus color and number words.

Print the checklist and check off what your child reads within about three seconds. Many kindergartens aim for 25 to 100 sight words by the end of the year, so don't worry if your child is partway through; steady progress and solid letter sounds matter more than the count. Practice three to five new words at a time with the worksheets and flash cards.

Tips for using it

  • Begin with words that make sentences fast: I, see, a, the, can, like, is, my.
  • Teach was and saw a week apart; they're the most commonly reversed pair.
  • Read decodable books that use the words you're practicing.

Questions

How many sight words should a kindergartner know?

Schools set different goals, commonly somewhere from 25 to 100 words by the end of kindergarten. Ask your child's teacher which list and goal they use.

What are the most important kindergarten sight words?

The highest-frequency ones: the, a, and, to, I, is, you, it, in, said, was and he. These appear on both the Dolch and Fry lists.

Should kindergartners memorize sight words or sound them out?

Both. Kids should sound out decodable words (can, it, big) and connect the letters to sounds even in irregular words like said. Memorizing word shapes alone doesn't last.
