These 70 spelling bee words are for 5th and 6th grade bees. They test patterns that trip up strong spellers: silent and unusual letters (yacht, tongue, rhyme), words from other languages (souvenir, boulevard, quarantine), double letters (committee, parallel, raspberry) and unstressed vowels (privilege, nuisance, cinnamon).
Print the list and practice ten at a time with the test activity, which shuffles the order and prints a pronouncer script. These are Edulist's own words, not an official contest list; check your bee's study materials too.
Tips for using it
- Learn the language of origin; French words often end in -ique or -eau, and Greek words use ph and y.
- Write each missed word in a sentence to anchor its meaning.
