This 5th grade spelling list has 16 weekly units of about 15 words, built around meaning. It covers -able and -ible, -ance/-ence and -ant/-ent, Latin roots (port, rupt, dict, struct, spect, tract, ject, scrib), prefixes inter-, sub-, super- and trans-, assimilated prefixes (illegal, impossible, irregular), -cial, -tial and -cian, plurals of words ending in o and f, and pairs that show related spellings, like sign and signal or compete and competition.
Print the year or choose a unit for worksheets and a test. The best fifth grade spelling habit is "think of a related word": the silent g in sign makes sense once you hear it in signal.
Tips for using it
- Build a word web for each root: port → export, import, portable, report.
- For -able vs. -ible, -able usually follows a complete word (readable); -ible often doesn't (visible).
