This 4th grade spelling list has 16 weekly units of 15 words. It focuses on the patterns in longer words: prefixes dis-, mis-, non- and in-, suffixes -ment, -able and -ous, the endings -tion, -sion, -ture and -sure, schwa endings (-er, -or, -ar; -al, -el, -le), -ough and -augh, ie and ei, doubling before a suffix (beginning, preferred), Greek roots (tele, graph, photo, phon, scope), and tricky homophones like weather and whether.

Print the year or pick a unit for worksheets and a test. Fourth graders are ready to learn why words are spelled the way they are, so talk about meaning parts: invisible is in- (not) + vis (see) + -ible.

Tips for using it

  • Underline the suffix in each word, then spell the base word separately.
  • For schwa endings (doctor, collar), link the word to a related form if one exists.
