This 6th grade spelling list has 12 units of 15 words. It covers Greek roots (bio, geo, logy, meter), Latin roots (aud, vis, vid, mot), number prefixes (uni-, bi-, tri-, multi-, poly-), verbs that become nouns (decide, decision; admit, admission), -ary, -ery and -ory, the -cede/-ceed/-sede family, doubled consonants before suffixes (committed, occurrence), silent letters (island, debt, yacht), and math and social studies words.

Print the year or choose a unit for worksheets and a test. Middle school spelling ties closely to vocabulary, so have your child define two or three words from each unit as well as spell them.

Tips for using it

  • Only three common words end in -ceed: proceed, succeed, exceed. Supersede is the only -sede.
  • Show how decide becomes decision: the d changes to s before -ion.
