This 4th grade spelling worksheet scrambles unit 6, the endings -tion and -sion (action, nation, question, direction, vacation, vision, division, television, decision, explosion and more). Each scramble is checked so it never spells the original word or another word on the list, and the answer key shows every word.

Unscrambling makes kids think about which letters go together; spotting t-i-o-n or s-i-o-n in the jumble is half the puzzle. Turn off Show a word bank for a harder version, or switch to word shapes, missing letters or the practice test for the same words.

Tips for using it

  • Find the ending first, then build the rest of the word.
  • Sort the finished words into -tion and -sion and say each one aloud: listen for 'shun' vs. 'zhun'.

Questions

When is it -tion and when is it -sion?

-tion is far more common. -sion often follows l, n, r or s (tension, version) or makes a 'zhun' sound (vision, decision). Learning word families helps more than rules.

Can I make word scrambles from my own list?

Yes. Choose My own word list and type up to 60 words.
