How to use it

  1. Choose your words

Type your own list (up to 60 words) or pick a grade list from kindergarten to 8th grade or a spelling bee list.

  2. Pick a unit

Each grade list has 12 to 19 weekly pattern units. Unit 0 prints the whole year as a list.

  3. Choose an activity

Rainbow write, ABC order, missing letters, word shapes, unscramble, sentences, look-say-cover-write-check or a practice test.

  4. Print or download

Turn the answer key on or off, choose primary or plain lines, then print or save the PDF.

How to use the spelling worksheet generator

Pick a Word list first. My own word list takes up to 60 words, one per line or separated by commas; longer lists split into groups of 10. The grade lists cover kindergarten through 8th grade spelling words in weekly pattern units, and the spelling bee lists run from easy 1st–2nd grade words to hard words for teens and adults.

Then choose Unit or group and an Activity:

  • Word list prints the unit as a checklist, or the whole year when the unit is 0.
  • Practice test prints numbered lines with a score box. Its answer key is a dictation script in test order. The spelling test maker opens straight to this activity.
  • Rainbow write: each word three times, in three colors.
  • ABC order: a shuffled word bank and numbered lines.
  • Missing letters: letter boxes with blanks, plus a line for the whole word. Turn off the word bank for a harder version.
  • Word shapes: match each word to its letter-height boxes.
  • Unscramble: scrambles are checked so none spells the answer or another word on the list.
  • Write a sentence and Look, say, cover, write, check for recall practice.

What makes a good spelling worksheet

Spelling research is consistent on a few points: kids learn more from words grouped by pattern than from random lists, and they learn more from writing words from memory than from copying them. So a good week of worksheets:

  • Starts with the pattern. Sort or notice it first: long a spelled ai in the middle of a word, ay at the end.
  • Moves from support to recall. Rainbow write and word shapes on day one; missing letters without a word bank and look-say-cover-write-check midweek; a test at the end.
  • Uses the right list. If a pretest is nearly perfect, the list is too easy; if your child misses more than half, it's too hard.

Printing tips

Print at actual size so primary lines keep their proportions. For rainbow writing, have three colored pencils ready before starting. Print the answer key on a separate page so your child can self-check after a test.

When worksheets aren't enough

If spelling stays hard even with steady practice, or your child spells the same word several different ways, a structured, multisensory program can help. Compare options in our best spelling curriculum guide or browse spelling programs. All About Spelling teaches rules step by step with letter tiles; Spelling You See uses daily copywork and dictation; Sequential Spelling builds word families; and Spelling Shed adds game-based practice. Curriculum like this is often an eligible expense for education savings accounts and scholarships, though each program decides; check your state's options and save favorites to your wishlist.

Questions

Is this spelling worksheet generator free?

Yes, with no sign-up or watermark. Every page has a small edulist.com footer.

Can I save my spelling list?

Your words and settings are saved in the page address, so bookmarking the page keeps your list. You can also download each worksheet as a PDF.

What are word shape boxes?

Boxes sized to each letter: tall for letters like b, d and t, hanging for g, p and y, and short for the rest. When two words share a shape, the first letter is printed as a hint so every answer is unique.

Do the grade lists match my child's school?

They follow a common pattern sequence, but every school's list is different. If your child brings home a list, type it in as your own words.
