These 40 kindergarten vocabulary words are rich, fun words that go beyond what a five-year-old already says: enormous instead of big, giggle instead of laugh, scurry, cozy, wobbly and curious. Each has a definition a kindergartner can understand and a sentence to read aloud. Position words (above, below, between) are included because kindergartners need them for following directions.

Kindergartners learn new words mostly by hearing them, so read the list aloud, act the words out, and use them in conversation all week. The word map activity works well as a draw-it page: have your child draw the word in the picture box.

Tips for using it

  • Act out the action words: stomp, tumble, wiggle, stretch, peek.
  • Use opposites together: rough and smooth, tiny and enormous.

Questions

What vocabulary words should a kindergartner know?

Beyond everyday words, kindergartners benefit from describing words (gentle, enormous), feeling words (proud, grumpy) and position words (above, between) that show up in books and directions.

How do I teach vocabulary to a kindergartner?

Read aloud, explain a new word in simple terms, act it out and use it again later that day. Picture books are the best source of new words at this age.
