These 40 7th grade vocabulary words help students argue, analyze and describe with precision: corroborate, refute, concede, rhetoric, impartial, prevalent, tenacious and eloquent. Many come from Latin roots that unlock other words (bene in benevolent, cred in incredible, vid in evident).

Each word has a definition and example sentence. Seventh graders write more arguments, so words like concede, refute and corroborate are especially useful. Work through one set of 10 at a time with the worksheets and answer keys.

Tips for using it

  • Use argument words in a family debate: concede a point, refute a claim.
  • Find the root in each word and list two other words that share it.
