These 40 3rd grade vocabulary words are the academic words third graders start to meet in every subject: estimate, predict, conclude, evidence, sequence, summarize, data and identify. Alongside them are describing words for reading and writing, like reluctant, determined, anxious, relieved and vast.

Each word has a definition written for third graders and an example sentence. Teach one set of 10 a week; matching and fill-in-the-blank sheets in the generator check understanding, and the word map is good for the hardest word in each set.

Tips for using it

  • Use predict, evidence and conclude while reading together: What do you predict? What's your evidence?
  • Have your child keep a word journal with a drawing for each new word.
